Digital Detox

Emma Bray

A digital detox is a period of time in which a person intentionally reduces the amount of time spent online, or stops using digital devices and social media altogether. The goal is to take a break from screens and reconnect with real life, benefiting both your mental and physical health.

Unplugging from devices and disconnecting from social media can help you to feel calm and more content, feel better about yourself and improve your health and better your sleep. It can help you to be more productive, improve relationships with people and give you more time to do things you enjoy.

To get started on your digital detox:

  • Set aside your phone for a few hours each day

  • Disconnect from the internet for a day or more

  • Put your phone on airplane mode most of the day

  • Leave your phone outside your bedroom overnight

  • Take work emails off your phone

  • Go out and leave your phone behind

  • Turn off notifications

If you feel like your digital addiction is disrupting your day-to-day life and you’re unable to take back control or unsure how to get started, talk to your doctor or a therapist. They may help you come with solutions that work best for your lifestyle.
