Holistic health is an approach to wellness that simultaneously addresses the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual components of health. It can help people achieve higher levels of wellness and prevent disease, whilst also helping people recognise the connection between different aspects of their health.
The 5 areas of holistic health:
Physical
Physical health is important not just for the body but for your overall health and well being. Ensuring you are giving your body enough physical activity, rest, and nutrients are all vital in taking care of it and, in turn, positively affecting your mood and social life.
Mental
When you are experiencing ongoing mental health issues, both your mind and your body won’t be functioning as well as they could. Seeking mental health support is so important, whether it’s confiding in a friend for support, or trying therapy with a trained professional.Â
Emotional
Emotional health focuses on your ability to think clearly and make good decisions. It means being open to feeling your emotions fully, and then learning how to understand, analyse, and accept them.
Spiritual
Spiritual health is a person's connection to something greater than themselves. It can also refer to a person's sense of purpose, meaning, and peace. Contemplating the meaning or purpose of life, thinking about important moral values, meditation, and/or spending time connecting with nature are all ways to practice spiritual health.
Social
Social interactions contribute to our emotional states and how we view ourselves. They also affect our sense of belonging and self-esteem. To strengthen social health, reach out to old friends, meet new people and make happy and healthy connections!
Holistic medicine is meant to complement, not replace, traditional medical care. Holistic health doesn’t just focus on the physical body, but on the combination of many different aspects of health. When all of these components are combined they work together in maintaining your overall well-being.
