Look After Yourself This Winter

Emma Bray

There are some things you can do to help yourself stay well this winter. This includes keeping up to date with your vaccinations, and getting medical help as soon as you feel unwell.

You are eligible for the Flu vaccinations if you are:

  • are aged 65 or over (including those who will be 65 by 31 March 2025)

  • have certain health conditions

  • are pregnant

  • are a frontline health or social care worker

  • live in a care home for older adults

Children aged 2 to 17 can get the children's flu vaccine. It is important that children get protected against flu to protect them from getting seriously ill, or passing on to someone more vulnerable. Whilst children aged 2 and 3 years old can get the flu vaccine at their GP surgery, school-aged children will get their vaccine through their school or a community clinic.

You may also be eligible for other vaccinations this winter, including the:

  • pneumococcal vaccine (if you're aged 65 or over)

  • RSV vaccine (if you're pregnant or aged 75 to 79 – if you turned 80 on or after 1 September 2024, you're also eligible for the vaccine until 31 August 2025)

Some people are more vulnerable to the effects of the cold weather, and in turn can become unwell quicker, and may lead to more serious health conditions. You can get help and advice from:

  1. Your local pharmacy

  2. Your GP practice

  3. NHS 111

  4. In an emergency, go to A&E or call 999

Keeping warm over the winter months can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression. Heating your home, wearing several layers of clothing and keeping windows closed at night will maintain a warm temperature in the home. With the rising cost of living, simple changes can help to keep you and your home warm.

Being careful when out and about on icy pavements and roads to avoid injury. Wear shoes with a good grip and wrap up with a scarf around the mouth to protect from the cold air. Only go out where necessary - ensure you are stocked up with food and medicine supplies.
