Dementia Friendly

The Dementia Friendly Community is an alliance of organisations to connect, take action on dementia and build dementia-friendly communities. The Colchester group welcomes all organisations across the borough. The aim of the group is to spearhead the development of a dementia-friendly borough. The group is chaired by Community 360 Engagement Officer, Helen Clegg, with Mark Healy of Colchester Borough Council acting as Vice Chair. The group meets quarterly. Members work collaboratively to share knowledge and good practice. Each member organisation is accountable for progressing their agreed actions and demonstrating progress every six months.

The Mersea Memory Café is a safe, relaxed, and friendly place to enjoy a chat, light-hearted activities, and a drink, in addition, the cafe provides a great support service for families and carers. The café was set up in June 2023 by the Mersea GP practice to support the local community, over the last eight months the number of monthly visitors has increased to 20.

Seated yoga has the same physical and mental benefits as yoga, with the added advantage of being accessible for anyone who is unable to stand for long periods of time. It is a gentle practice that is suitable for beginners, seniors, and those with disabilities or limited mobility.

The Partnership has offered patients to attend for free, a three month once a month course in Mersea, Manningtree and Walton-on-the Naze, the course is taken by a fully qualified Yoga Instructor and the patients leave the course with a booklet of all the moves that have been covered during the course.
